NEW! Sight Reading is Easy!

Paule Barsalou with Tanya Carey (IL)

Are you a violin, viola, cello or bass teacher wanting to help your students improve their reading skills? The Sight Reading is Easy! supplementary course will explore a process to teach music reading skills to violin, viola, cello and string bass players through a series of preparatory games in Ready to Read followed by a sight-reading method of four books in first position for all but string bass, which uses the first three positions. The participants will receive a copy of  SRE for their specific instrument as part of the course.

Tanya Carey has produced first desk players in Chicago area youth orchestras for decades. She taught the youngest principal cellist in a major orchestra in the United States as well as a Grammy Award-winning quartet cellist. This is the approach she has used for her teaching career to produce her prize-winning students. She was a violin/viola teacher for Paul Rolland's Federal String Project and taught string bass for over 30 years.  You will need your instruments.

Reading materials and books authored by the instructor will be available through The Sound Post store on campus.

Prerequisites: Everyone welcome, including non-Suzuki teachers!

Hours: 10 hours of class time.

Registration: Saturday August 12 at 8 am. Orientation meeting begins at 8:30 am. Course begins at 9 am and continues to Sunday August 13 at 3 pm.

NEW! Seminar in Body Mapping

Tanya Bénard

with Amber Ghent (ON)

Overcoming Discomfort at the Instrument

Not sure how to help your student or child who is uncomfortable at the instrument? Do you suffer from limitation or poor coordination at the instrument?

This seminar is designed for music educators, parents, and senior students who wish to have a better understanding of healthy movement at the instrument. This introduction to body mapping will make use of anatomical models, images, palpating structures in the body, and movement explorations to uncover ways of accessing our body maps and retrain healthy movement.

Mapping is a specific technique used by licensed Andover Educators to help musicians recognize the source of harmful movement, and to replace it with movement that is free and based on the truth of our anatomical structure. This technique is informed by the latest neuroscience about how the brain produces movement, and has helped hundreds of musicians play with more ease and heal themselves of injury and pain.

For more information about Body Mapping Lessons, please visit amberghent.com/body-mapping

Seminar Fee: $25 CDN

A limited number of Private Lessons will be available, first-come, first-served. Please register in advance in order to reserve a lesson between your other scheduled classes. Private 30-minute lesson fee: $56.50 CDN.
