Piano Program

Junior Program in Piano

Students Eligible: Suzuki piano students, Bks. 1–3

Program includes:

  • Daily individual lesson (4 students in a one-hour class)
  • Daily repertoire (Bks. 1 & 2) or percussion class (Bk. 3)
  • Daily Music & Movement (pre-reading) or reading ensemble (duet) class
  • Solo recital performance opportunity for everyone
  • Ensemble performance
  • Play-ins

Daily Options (you may choose only one of the following):

  • Handbell Choir (bk. 2 and up, able to read music)
  • Music at the Movies (students bk. 2 and above)
  • Music Through the Ages (age 6 and up)

Additional Daily Option: Operetta (you may choose operetta as your only option, or as a special option in addition to one of the regular Daily Options)

Junior Program students may also register for private Alexander Technique lessons, accompanied by a parent.

Pianists Suzuki Bk. 3 & above have the opportunity to participate in the Sonatina Jamboree (see Intermediate Program below).

A Music Reading Assessment form, to be completed by your teacher, will be sent to you upon registration. Those students who read music at the junior level or higher, as assessed by their home teacher, will study and polish two duets with a partner. Music will be forwarded as soon as a suitable partner is determined. Please register early to facilitate this process.

Master class

Intermediate Program in Piano

Students Eligible: Suzuki piano students, from Bk. 4 to Haydn Sonata

Program includes:

  • Daily individual lesson (3 students in a one-hour class)
  • Daily percussion class
  • Daily reading ensemble (duet) class
  • Solo recital performance opportunity for everyone
  • Sonatina Jamboree*
  • Ensemble performance
  • Play-ins

Daily Options (you may choose only one of the following):

  • Handbell Choir
  • Music at the Movies
  • Music Through the Ages

Additional Daily Option: Operetta (you may choose operetta as your only option, or as a special option in addition to one of the regular Daily Options)

Intermediate Program students may also register for private Alexander Technique lessons, accompanied by a parent.

Intermediate Program pianists have the opportunity to participate in the Sonatina Jamboree, playing one polished and memorized movement from the following works with a string quartet in an informal setting: Clementi, Sonatina, Op. 36, No. 1; Kuhlau, Sonatina, Op. 55, No. 1; Clementi, Sonatina, Op. 36, No. 3 (Spiritoso); or Beethoven, Sonata, Op. 49, No. 2.

Students will study and polish two duets with a partner. A Music Reading Assessment form, to be completed by your teacher, will be sent to you upon registration. Music will be forwarded as soon as a suitable partner is determined. Please register early to facilitate this process

Senior Program in Piano

Students Eligible: Suzuki piano students who know the complete Haydn, Sonata No. 48, or who have completed Grade 8 piano (RCM or Conservatory Canada)

Program includes:

  • Daily individual lesson with Suzuki repertoire or other advanced repertoire of your choice (2 students in a one-hour class)
  • Daily String/Piano Duo class or Duo Piano class, depending on registration
  • Daily percussion class
  • Solo recital performance
  • Duo performance
  • Ensemble performance
  • Play-ins

Daily Options (you may choose only one of the following):

  • Handbell Choir
  • Music at the Movies
  • Music Through the Ages

Additional Daily Option: Operetta (you may choose operetta as your only option, or as a special option in addition to one of the regular Daily Options)

In the String/Piano Duo Class, pianists will study and polish a string & piano selection (with a string partner) under the experienced guidance of pianist Ken Gee (ON) or violinist Margot Jewell (ON).

In the Duo Piano Class, pianists will study and polish a piano selection for two pianos. Once registration forms are received, students will be paired according to age and level. Pre-formed groups are encouraged to apply. Please register early to facilitate the process of music selection. Your teacher will be consulted.

Practice rooms will be reserved on Sunday for those students who wish to rehearse before their first Duo class. Please note that some students will have their first Duo class on Sunday.

NOTE: This year, Senior program students may also enroll in the special Seminar on the Alexander Technique, held on the evening of Tuesday, August 14, and also enroll in private Alexander lessons during the week.

Young Artist Program in Piano

This class is open to senior piano students, and provides instruction in a setting that moves towards traditional music college/university instruction while maintaining roots in Suzuki philosophy and pedagogy. It is expected that these senior players, who provide a role model to other participating students, will join happily in other Institute events.

Students Eligible: Pianists who have completed Mozart, Sonata, K. 330 (Suzuki Bk. 6) or who have completed RCM or Conservatory Canada Gr. 9 piano
