Join SOSI in piloting a new SAA course next summer!

Based on the long-term success of Latin America’s Teaching Strategies course, and answering the need for Suzuki teachers to gain practical teaching skills at earlier levels, the SAA is piloting Violin Unit 2 with Teaching Strategies at SOSI in 2019.

It’s actually two courses in one—a regular 15-hour Violin Unit 2 course covering Book 2 pedagogy, combined with Teaching Strategies, a 10-hour class that includes hands-on practicum-like activities and guided practice-teaching in a “pedagogy master class” setting.

SAA-registered Teacher Trainer Joanne Melvin, past SAA board chair and current member of SAA’s Teacher Development Advisory Committee (TDAC), will teach the course. Participants who complete the integrated course will come away with valuable information, both about Book 2 and about their own teaching, and they will be able to register their participation in both the Violin Unit 2 and “Strategies” courses with SAA.

Have you already taken and registered Violin Unit 2, but want to take advantage of the “Strategies” course? You can sign up for “Strategies” as a single course!
Prerequisites: High school diploma; Completion of Every Child Can! and Unit 1 (or Unit 1A and 1B) as a Participant; Current SAA active membership; Approved video audition through the SAA. Go to www.suzukiassociation.org/teachers/guides/audition

Required Course Preparation:
All teacher training participants are asked to prepare and memorize the repertoire to be studied to the point of fluent performance. Additionally, participants should be conversant with the ideas presented in Dr. Suzuki’s book Nurtured by Love.

All participants will be performing Suzuki repertoire and other materials in class. Please bring your own violin. It is recommended that participants bring an audio recorder and a notebook to all sessions. 100% attendance is required for registering the course.

Hours: Book 2 component is 15 hours of class time. 8 hours of observation plus 10 hours of Teaching Strategies class time.

Registration: Sunday August 12 at 8 am. Orientation meeting begins at 8:45 am. Course begins at 9 am on Sunday and continues to Friday at 4 pm.

Cost: $310 CDN (Unit 2 must be registered and paid for separately)

If your instructor has prepared additional materials for the course, they will be posted online for you to print and bring to SOSI. If you do not have access to a printer, when you register, please request that our office print it for you. The cost will be added to your invoice.

All Teacher Development courses are subject to cancellation should there be insufficient registration. If you need to book air or rail transportation to and from SOSI, please first confirm with our Administrator that the course is running and there is room in the course for you. Under no circumstances are we responsible for your travel or other expenses if it turns out that a course needs to be cancelled for any reason.
