Final Competition

The live performance competition will take place at Melrose United Church, 86 Homewood Avenue, Hamilton, on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 2:30 pm. Up to four pianists will be selected to perform based on preliminary competition made up of recorded performances by the applicants. The competition is open to the public (Duet Club series ticket or single admission at the door of $15 adult, $12 student or senior).

Performance Requirements

  • Competitors must perform two contrasting works for solo piano, including one of the works submitted in the recorded Preliminary Round.
  • Repertoire should be "classical" (not popular or jazz), in the sense of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th or 21st century Classical. Unpublished works are not recommended.
  • No more than one movement of a Sonata may be performed.
  • There is a time limit of 20 minutes (if the competitor exceeds 20 minutes, the performance may be stopped).
  • Music must be performed by memory.
  • Competitors must provide a brief biography which includes some background about their musical education.

Other Information

  • The decision of the judges is final.
  • Any perceived interference with the judges’ decision by a competitor or associated people may result in disqualification.
  • Competitiors must each bring a cheque for $25 payable to the Duet Club of Hamilton. They may not perform in the final competition without paying this entry fee.

Award

  • A First Prize award of $600 and Second Prize award of $250 will be given to the winners by the Duet Club of Hamilton. The jury reserves the right to award a tie for First Prize, in which case the $600 prize will be divided between the co-winners.
  • The First Prize winner will also be invited to perform in the Duet Club of Hamilton 2017-2018 series.
